Hybrid Vineyard

Hybrid Vineyard

This part of the Garden will feature a pergola that will replicate a section of the vine-covered walkway built by winemaker Jean-Louis Vignes. The walkway, built after Vignes’ arrival in 1831, ran from his winery near the park down to the Los Angeles River. It was L.A.’s first built tourist attraction, pre-dating the Hollywood sign by about 100 years. The pergola will be covered with the hybrid grape, which scientists using genetic sequencing have determined dates to the mid-1800s. Winegrowers throughout the world today are experimenting with new hybrids as a strategy to survive climate change.
