Spanish Vineyard

Spanish Vineyard

This part of the Grape Garden connects visitors to the early history of Los Angeles winemaking, as well as to the men and women who worked in the vineyards in order to feed their families. For a good part of its pre-industrial history, the landscape of Los Angeles was covered in such vineyards. This parcel will be planted to the Mission grape and be arranged according to winegrowing practices of the era -- head-trained and spaced eight feet apart, by what the Spanish called the Marco Real. The vineyard carries special weight for the Tongva, who were coerced into working in the vineyards and wineries of early Los Angeles. They would be joined in short order by immigrants from around the world.
